A shipment containing 5,000 guns from a “friendly country” is set to arrive in the country soon, President Rodrigo Duterte said.

In a speech at the inauguration of Armscor’s shooting range in Davao City Monday (February 26), Duterte said the Philippines has other sources of firearms apart from the United States.

“Our neighbors who are good and despite the boycott sa America of our needs we are getting some firearms somewhere. I am not at liberty to divulge it but in the next few days we will have about 5,000 more shipment coming from a friendly country,” he said.

With the military getting a fresh supply of firearms, Duterte expressed confidence that they will win the “pocket wars” against terrorists and rebel forces.

What would it do good to us if we are a weak nation? Kaya kayanin ka lang,” he said.

In October last year, the Philippines received 5,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles from Russia and other military equipment.

China also donated assault and sniper rifles worth P370 million.

Duterte, however, cancelled the military’s purchase of helicopters from Canada over the Canadian government’s concern that they will be used against rebels.
