President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that the Philippines is withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC) due to the “baseless, unprecedented and outrageous” attacks against him.

In a statement Wednesday (March 14), Duterte said the attacks directed at him and his administration, as well as the alleged attempt of the ICC special prosecutor to place him under the tribunal’s jurisdiction, is a violation of due process and presumption of innocence.

“I therefore declare and forthwith give notice, as President of the Republic of the Philippines, that the Philippines is withdrawing its ratification of the Rome Statute effective immediately,” he said.
