Duterte not trying to evade ICC prosecution – Pimentel

Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Wednesday dismissed the impression that President Duterte is trying out to evade prosecution before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his alleged serious misdeeds by withdrawing the Philippines’ ratification of the Rome Statute.

“This has nothing to do with his case. Ano lang ito, dito lang ito sa attitude ng kanilang prosecutor,” Pimentel, president of Duterte’s political party, PDP-Laban, said.

In announcing his decision, the President claimed that the “baseless, unprecedented and outrageous attacks” against him and his administration and the alleged attempt of ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to place him under the tribunal’s jurisdiction has prompted him to withdraw the country’s membership from the ICC.

“If I were (the) President, baka ginawa ko rin yun eh. Kasi imagine, sino nagrereklamo? Tapos ano yung mga alegasyon? Hindi ba ito domestic policy? This is law enforcement. Sa mata ng President, noong nagkakampanya pa sya, the main problem is law and order. Ano root cause ng deterioration? Sa mata nya drugs. (This was) validated by the people. He won the election. He will now enforce the law. May law and yet nakikialam sila. They’re trying to micromanage the country eh, sumusobra. Eh I can see his point of view,” Pimentel said.

The Senate chief maintained, despite his assertions, that the decision of Duterte is not aimed at skirting the ICC proceedings.

“Walang effect doon ‘yun. Kahit non-members pwede nilang i-ano. Maganda yung statement ng Pres na you don’t abuse your discretion na sino-sino lang nag co-complain sa inyo, pulitiko pa man din, papatulan ninyo. Tama rin ‘yun. Tama rin itong ginawa ni President,” he said.
