HOW ‘TIME’ MANAGED TO TURN ITSELF INTO A MEDIOCRE PROPAGANDA MACHINERY
What I used to consider as a respectable and fair source of news and information, TIME has managed to turn itself into a mediocre propaganda machinery of corrupt, irrelevant and hallucinating Philippine Liberal Party and its minions.
Since President Duterte was elected President, TIME has always been critical of his administration, accusing him of EJKs based on information provided by dubious sources, clearly emanating from Duterte’s critics. What is unbelievable is for such a huge and once a respected media outfit, to rely solely on biased and unverified news sources without even an attempt to secure the government’s side of the story.
And in its most recent faux pas, a 14 year old high school student from St. Scholastica’s College, considered as “young activist” Shibby de Guzman, was chosen as one of TIME Magazine’s “30 Most Influential Teens of 2017 along with another Filipino Hawaii-based video blogger and online sensation Bretman Rock. Both were chosen based on “accolades across numerous fields, global impact through social media and overall ability to drive news.” It will be recalled that Shibby was part of those student protesters who condemned the burial of the late Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani last year.
TIME magazine said: “She carried a megaphone and wore a cardboard sign similar to those sometimes strewn over the bodies of drug-war victims. Then, in a widely shared social-media post, she shut down critics who alleged that her fellow protesters were brainwashed: “We completely know and understand the injustice we are protesting against.”
Shibby was further quoted as saying: “I’m fighting for people who didn’t have a voice. Some people don’t have the time and the privilege to study in a school like this, to speak on a stage like that. It’s my job to speak for them.” She also protested and spoke out against the Duterte’s war on drugs. TIME said De Guzman hoped to rally even more young people to take action in the country.
I am all for the active involvement of the youth on socio-political issues, and even the 1987 Philippine Constitution Article II Section 13 “recognizes the vital role of the youth in national building and shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. It shall inculcate in the youth patriotism and nationalism, and encourage their involvement in public and civic affairs.” I would even concur with the school administrators of St. Scholastica’s College who claim that they do not confine their students to the classrooms and justified their students’ participation in street protests as their means of educating women and men of character, empowering them to be agents of social change. For them, it is the heart and content of their education with a social responsibility. And this is commendable indeed.
HOWEVER, THERE ARE JUST TIMES WHEN IT IS PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT THESE CHILDREN ARE MERELY BEING EXPLOITED FOR POLITICAL GAINS. AND SHIBBY DE GUZMAN IS THE CLASSIC EXAMPLE. Everyone knows she is being used to advance the political agenda of people like Hontiveros who also happens to be a graduate of St. Scholastica’s. Another critic of the President’s war on drugs, Sister Mary John Mananzan is also from the same school. IF THIS ISN’T EXPLOITATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF ONE’S OWN AGENDA, THEN I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS.
Who is Shibby influencing? Simply because she is protesting against Duterte already makes her influential and deserving to be in the TIME list? Well anyway, this is TIME’s List of Influential Teens, so they can choose whoever they want, using whatever criteria they desire.
I’M JUST SAYING, BY SELECTING SHIBBY DE GUZMAN AS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL TEENS OF 2017, TIME HAS LIVED UP TO ITS PRESENT IMAGE, MEDIOCRITY.
